TrailerWrap: Sustainable Design Hits the Trailer Park

TrailerWrap is the ultimate recycling… The deliberate reuse and refabrication of an actual trailer into a stunning, sustainable, contemporary home.

The refabricated trailer started life as a rundown two bedroom trailer measuring a little more than 10 feet by 47 feet. Saved from the landfill, the trailer was rebuilt into an open, loft-like space that extends outward to include additional outdoor living space. With a sloped roof, higher ceiling and reconfigured space, the recycled trailer becomes a model of affordable, sustainable design.

As an exercise in sustainability, the re-fab home makes use of reclaimed and recycled materials. Partitions in the home are made from salvaged solid core doors with recycled scrap veneer. Both the counters and kitchen are made with reclaimed butcher block. Similarly, the slats and deck are reclaimed from old decks.

The TrailerWrap project is an effort to create affordable, attractive housing that follows sustainable design principles in higher density areas. The brainchild of Professor Michael Hughes and the Design Outreach Initiative, TrailerWrap was successful in recreating a new sustainable "mobile home" that defies all previous conceptions of a trailer.
