Self-Dimming Light Adds To Panasonic Green Products

Panasonic continues its foray into the world of green products next month with its new self-dimming light. This energy efficient light will be the first residential light that adjusts the light output automatically.

The Auto-Eco Light-Control Twin Pa is a fluorescent light that adjusts the light levels according to the brightness of the room. Using a luminance sensor, the energy efficient light can gauge how much light is present and then adjust the light output to reach the desired lighting level.

This clever light also uses the luminance sensor to determine the color and brightness of the floor, which affects the amount of light being reflected back into the room. The Panasonic light can then respond by dimming or brightening the optimal amount to reach the selected brightness, which can be adjusted by the user.

By using a sensor to automatically dim the light, Panasonic is hoping the light will significantly reduce the amount of energy used to power the lights. In fact, according to Tech-On, a one-week experiment with the light found that the energy efficient light reduced power consumption by an impressive 60%.

Panasonic plans to start selling the self-dimming light in Japan this March. While not the most attractive light, it's an interesting, innovative idea. I just wish they had spent a little more time on the aesthetics.
