Recycled Shipping Containers Go Golfing

Recycled shipping containers took up a new sport this year, making an appearance at the Sony Open Golf Tournament in Hawaii.

According to the East Oahu Sun, the golf tournament made use of the shipping containers for their Greenside Lanai complex. Situated right next to the golf course, the contemporary complex was built of 90% recycled materials, including two recycled shipping containers.

The repurposed shipping containers were made even more environmentally friendly with the addition of a photovoltaic system that allows the complex to produce its own power. The shipping container structure was also oriented to maximize the natural benefits of that particular site.

Another great benefit of structures made from shipping containers, the complex is both adaptable and portable by nature. For now, it has been dismantled and sent to the site of the next Open at Turtle Bay. After that, the recycled structure will be used for educational uses before it is moved back to the Sony Open site next year.
